How a Community Garden is Cultivating Sustainability and Unity
We are thrilled to share an insightful article, originally featured in the Indo Gulf Times’ 11th Urs Mubarak Special Edition Epaper, written by our very own Khadija Millwala. This piece highlights the environmental and sustainability efforts of the dedicated Aqeeq Garden members based in Houston, showcasing their inspiring work toward creating a greener future.
The Dawoodi Bohra community has long pursued environmental sustainability, striving to create an eco-friendly environment that reduces our carbon footprint. One of our key initiatives has been tree planting. The women of the Houston community decided to expand this effort by starting a community herb and vegetable garden.
Located on the masjid premises, the garden began in 2021 with just one bed, thanks to the efforts of two dedicated volunteers. Since then, it has seen remarkable growth and now includes over 100 members on the garden committee.
The committee’s activities extend well beyond cultivating herbs and plants. They play a crucial role in educating the community through a range of workshops held throughout the year. These workshops cover topics such as sustainable gardening practices, organic farming, and the benefits of growing your own food. The committee also focuses on engaging children, encouraging them to participate and learn about the environment from a young age.
In addition to educational initiatives, the garden committee organizes and hosts farmers markets for the jamaat, providing a platform for local produce and homemade goods. These markets not only support local vendors but also foster a sense of community and shared purpose.
The mission of the garden is to establish a comprehensive and sustainable enrichment program that serves as both an educational platform and a source of community engagement. It offers a healthy outlet for participation, promoting values such as environmental stewardship, personal responsibility, and collaborative effort. By demonstrating how teamwork and dedication can lead to tangible, positive outcomes, the garden exemplifies how small actions can create significant benefits for all.
The lessons learned in the garden extend beyond its physical space. Participants gain practical knowledge and skills that can be applied to their own homes and communities, fostering a ripple effect of positive environmental practices. The garden not only enriches the lives of those directly involved but also inspires others to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to a greener future.
Author- Khadija Millwala – I am a mother of two beautiful humans and wife to an amazing doctor. My home life keeps me busy and gardening is a new found venture that has taken a whole different level in my career. I spend hours planning and learning about cultivating that I had never had an interest in before. This project gave me inspiration and fulfilled a hole that nothing else could. I take pride in everything I do and the garden has been a product of hard work, commitment and an openness to trial and error.
